David Laurie of Something In Construction records recommends… “Magic” by Ladyhawke

So much awesome music came my way this year, it is unutterably hard to know where to start to pick one tune. And the easy answer is almost any track on the TV On The Radio album. It is a long time since I fell so hard for an album. It is pure sex. And art. And magic. And you can dance to it. And sing along drunkenly. And you can play it to literally anyone and they will say DAMN this is AMAZING music. But you, dear reader, are smart, so you probably already know, or strongly suspect, that this is the case. The next most obvious answer is ‘Buriedfed’ on the debut album by Miles Benjamin Anthony Robinson. Produced by a fella from TVOTR and staffed by sundry Grizzly Bears. But another (goddam) label just signed that in the UK so I’ll let them tell you about that. I was thinking of picking something hopelessly obscure (Gentlemen Auction House, Alvin Band, Miniature Tigers, Everything Now) but instead am going to go for ‘Magic’ by Ladyhawke.

That, according to my iTunes is my most played non-Something In Construction song. And why not. It does sound a bit like a Swedish disco cousin of Laura Brannigan’s ‘Self Control’ but, ferfuxache (sic), what could possibly be better than that? Worthy of ABBA. It is going to be Number One in the charts for eleven weeks next summer or there is something deeply rotten at large in the world. It is a juggernaut of a pop song, not derailed by its mental nonsense lyrics that are only there ‘cos they rhyme (although I am not sure Magic and Atlantic actually do rhyme). I could sing it and it would still be number one. The rest of the album is OK and current single ‘My Delerium’ is actually rubbish but this song stands out like a mile high gleaming stained glass disco prism that makes everything around it look super colourful. Fucking awful sleeve though. What WERE they thinking?

David Laurie is the founder of Something In Construction records. Home to Loney Dear, Air France, The Silent League and Christian Silva to name but a few. He is also an occasional contibuter at TLOBF and is involved heavily in our monthly club nights. He also likes Chinese food, especially starters.
