Who To See At Simple Things 2016

21 October 2016, 10:00

Simple Things 2016 is almost upon us - and a bunch of the best acts on the bill have given us their recommendations of who not to miss.

Anna Meredith

So excited to see Jessy Lanza on the line-up for Simple Things! Production of her new record is totally spot on and her voice is incredible. Her 2013 track "Pull My Hair Back" was on my stereo pretty constantly for a few months.

Allah-Las' Spencer Dunham

I saw Dungeon earlier this year play a festival in Oslo and they were awesome. They sometimes extend their songs into long jams and are all really talented musicians. Also looking forward to seeing fellow Los Angelenos Warpaint perform.

Shame

Drag every inch of your feeble body to witness the only thing Bristol currently has to offer, Lice. A lifetime of regret will ensue if choosing to ignore this recommendation. Their music shows a level of intelligence and stupidity many artists are, unfortunately, unable to achieve.

U SHOULD GO SEE ABRA! I DON'T RLLY KNOW MUCH ABOUT MUSIC THEORY BUT HER VOICE ALWAYS SEEMS TO HIT THE EXACT NOTES I LOVE IN MELODIES. I CAN'T RLLY EXPLAIN IT WITHOUT TECHNICAL TERMS BUT IF U IMAGINE HER VOICE HITTING NOTES ON A KEYBOARD, THEY'D PROBABLY BE THE SAME ONES I'D TRY TO CHOOSE IF I WAS PLAYING THE KEYBOARD. ALSO SHE MAKES BEATS & THEY'RE DOPE.

Steve Mason

I would highly recommend going to see John Carpenter, not only has he directed some of the best films of the 1980s horror genre but he composed and played all the music himself, the man is a genius.

Cousin Kula

Psyched to see Squarepusher's band Shobaleader One. We're huge fans. Incredible musicians and their live set looks absolutely outrageous!

Flamingods

We were introduced to Anna Meredith at Latitude Festival this year and were blown away by her brilliantly colossal sound. An orchestral beast that keeps on building up; wonderfully arranged, hypnotic and explosive all the same. We dig it hard!

Lice

We stumbled across Scalping by accident (we were trying to see NE$$ but got to [Bristol venue] Start The Bus too late) and were absolutely floored. A visceral, techno-infused instrumental group blending brutal, tribal rhythms with a wilfully experimental use of electronics that aligns them with The Naturals, Silver Waves, and Giant Swan. Hypnotic and danceable, urgent and devastating - they are a good paradigm for Bristol's current wealth of punk bands and electronic artists, but are also the kind of band that makes other bands work a lot harder.

Throwing Shade

I want to see Warpaint and Veronica Vasika... both are strong female musical forces and I've seen neither of them before, so Simple Things would be a real good opportunity to catch them. And maybe even meet them too...!

Plastic Mermaids

Three Trapped Tigers look like they really take it somewhere live, it really kicks off! Think a bit Battles, a bit Bad Plus, a bit Squarepusher, a bit Aphex Twin - but all live. Really excited to see them.

Kayla Painter

Rival Consoles - His use of electronic and synthesized sounds is unusual and i'd be fascinated to see what he uses to play live. Electronic music can be quite cold and clinical but Rival Consoles tracks always have this other element to them which creates a more emotion driven listening experience for me.

Simple Things Festival 2017 takes place across central Bristol on 22 October. Find out more.
