James Chapman (aka Maps) releases his new album Turning The Mind via Mute on 28th September followed by an extensive UK tour (dates at the bottom of the post).

We asked James to make us an imaginary 10 track mixtape.. Turns out, the lad has preeeeeetty good taste. HEALTH and The Field! Big thumbs up.

1. HEALTH – In Violet
“I’ve just recently got into these guys and I really love what they’re doing. It sounds like Sonic Youth on the most potent acid you could imagine. Their songs sometimes seem to fall apart and explode but still stay so rhythmically tight. Pretty out there but with a real soul to it.”

2. Rival Consoles – Electorate
“This is a brilliant track. It starts off really dark but when it eventually kicks in it’s turned into a euphoric monster. He’s a really talented guy. There’s so much run-of-the-mill laptop/IDM stuff out there but his tracks are something really special.”

3. Crisp – Trigger
“I put this track in purely because it’s just a fantastic minimal track – I love it! I love the detuned synths, something I love doing in my music too, it creates a really dark sound. It’s a great one to DJ.”

4. Caroline Herring – Lover Girl
“I’m a massive fan of this woman. Her songs are so pure sounding, but are often about dark subject matters. This one isn’t though – it’s just a beautiful song about love. Her voice really is something else. I REALLY want to work with her! Gotta get the guts up to ask!”

5. The Chemical Brothers – Nude Night
“When a B-side sounds good enough to be most people’s A-sides you know it’s gotta be The Chems!! Absolute legends. This is a brilliant track. They’ve been a huge influence on me and still are. This is quite minimal to begin with but turns into a disco-esque dance floor filler. Tune!”

6. Cocaine Blues ‘Johnny Cash: Live From Fulsom Prison’
“Another legend! This song is great. It’s a great reason not to do cocaine and whisky if nothing else! No-one’s in Johnny Cash’s league. A true one-off”

7. The Field – Leave It
“I got into this guy after “From Here We Go Sublime” and his music has evolved so much since then. He’s added live drums for a start. I saw him play live recently and it was mind-blowing. This track is just pure blissed-out euphoria”

8. Herbert – Moving Like A Train (Lidell’s Radio Raw Hymn Instrumental)
“I don’t know much of Herbert’s stuff but this track is great. Jamie Lidell always seems to be having fun when he makes his music! It’s really playful and funky as hell. This would get anyone dancing.”

9. Lusine – Near Sight
“I think this must probably have the fattest bass line out of all 10 of these tracks. It’s a great mix of glitchy, clean electronica but with quite a techno feel.

10. Plaid – Host
“I was actually going to put a different Plaid track in but came across a soundtrack they’d done for the film ‘Heaven’s Door’ (which I know absolutely nothing about!) and thought it was amazing. They have a real knack of creating dark music but which makes you feel really hopeful. They were one of the first to do that and they influenced me a great deal. The end section to this track is almost Trance-like, with huge choral synths playing the melody. Awesome stuff! Actually, this wins the fattest bassline competition :).”
