The Hot Melts – The Hot Melts

By Daniel Offen, 14 September 2009

With the lyrics being pretty much irrelevant, and the guitars rarely playing anything but chords, the only thing that could possibly mark out The Hot Melts as special are their ridiculously cheesy backing vocals.

Their Hearts Were Full of Spring – How I Wasted My Youth

By Daniel Offen, 10 September 2009

Whilst not being particularly original, Their Hearts Were Full of Spring do bring lush indie-pop to the masses, the perfect soundtrack to hot Summer days…

She Keeps Bees – Nests

By Daniel Offen, 20 August 2009

Nests is a raw, powerful and incredibly sexy album from a Brooklyn duo who’ll forever be compared to The White Stripes. That, however, would be missing the point.

She Keeps Bees / Sons of Adrian and Noel / Woodpigeon – The Borderline, London, 12/08/09

By Daniel Offen, 19 August 2009

The Borderline bore witness to three of the best live bands around on a hot and sticky Wednesday night in the Capital. Dan Offen was there.

The Pains of Being Pure at Heart – The Garage, London 04/08/09

By Daniel Offen, 13 August 2009

Brooklyn band, The Pains of Being at Heart, have somehow managed to take the indie world by storm with their competently played, but basic and perhaps repetitive noise-pop. Daniel Offen decides whether it works in a live setting.

Rec.tangle – Heavy Maple

By Daniel Offen, 7 August 2009

This .seems, at times, like a soundtrack album – incremental and enjoyable enough when noticed, but is essentially happy to stay in the background, largely ignored.

Field Day 2009 – London, 01/08/09

By Daniel Offen, 6 August 2009

Located in Victoria Park with a great atmosphere, Field Day managed to keep the crowds entertained during a rain affected day in London.

Tiny Vipers – Life On Earth

By Daniel Offen, 29 July 2009

Folk would be the best way to describe the music contained within ‘Life on Earth’, but really the music transgresses folk, taking the ideas of an intimate, sparse record to the furthest point. Daniel Offen reviews.

Ear Pwr – Super Animal Brothers III

By Daniel Offen, 24 July 2009

For brief glimpses Ear Pwr’s attempts at surreal imagery and lively music do succeed, but too often they just come across as annoying, uninspired and almost cringe-worthy.

The Dead Weather – Horehound

By Daniel Offen, 17 July 2009

Another Jack White spin-off supergroup? Yup, but don’t worry, this one is definitely better than The Raconteurs… Daniel Offen reviews.

Wave Machines – Wave If You’re Really There

By Daniel Offen, 22 June 2009

A catchy album full of pop hooks, bright and cheesy synths and should really soundtrack the Summer months… if it stays sunny, that is.
