Perhaps with a bit of backing and appreciation back in the day, The Lines could have been major contenders. While ‘Flood Bank’ should see them quite rightly receive some belated recognition, Alex Harvey doubts it will put them alongside their peers.
About Alex Harvey
Wilderness – (k)no(w)here
When Wilderness, an art-rock four-piece band from Baltimore, were invited to write a piece of music for visual artist Charles Long at his exhibition at the Whitney Biennial in March this year, (k)no(w)here was the result.
Viarosa – Send for the Sea
A six-piece from London who draw on inspiration from the likes of Nick Cave, Johnny Cash and Nick Drake to create a ‘noir opera’ that would play out nicely in one of those old American folk bars that you’d only want to be passing through for fear of the creepy locals.
Earlimart – Hymn and Her
The prolific Earlimart release their ninth album, now down to a duo, and it deals with life, love and religion. Quite a bit about religion actually. Alex Harvey reviews.
Bodies of Water – A Certain Feeling
Bodies of Water is a four-piece from Los Angeles, including the married David and Meredith Metcalf, that have been drawing comparisons with Arcade Fire, Mamas and Papas and even Portishead.
Wild Beasts – Limbo, Panto
Alex Harvey questions whether being musically different from the crowd is enough to be “great”. With Wild Beasts, he thinks it is…
White Denim – Workout Holiday
One of the debuts of the year? Alex Harvey wrestles with the White Denim hype factory to find out if their worth it.
The Parlotones – Radio controlled robot
Indie hopefuls The Parlotones originally released this album in their native South Africa over 3 years ago. Alex Harvey has come to the conclusion that they really shouldn’t have bothered. Oh dear.
The Black Angels – Directions to See a Ghost
Alex Harvey reviews the latest album from The Velvet Undergroun aping noise-mongers, The Black Angels.
White Rabbits – Fort Nightly
Alex Harvey reviews the debut from one of New York’s brightest new bands. It’s just a shame it’s been out for a ages in the U.S. already…
The Envy Corps – Dwell
The Envy Corps are from the rather unglamorous surroundings of Des Moines, Iowa famous for being the place to be for insurance companies and, err, Slipknot. So its little wonder then that this four-piece would seek inspiration from elsewhere. The United Kingdom to be precise.
Monotonix – Body Language EP
Alex Harvey reviews the new EP from noise-mongers Monotonix. Just warn the neighbours before playing it.
