It’s been a while since we’ve seen or heard anything from Dark Dark Dark. Their Gothic take on Americana wooed us on their debut album The Snow Magic. There’s been a few changes as the musical river has passed under the bridge, and the newly added to band are ready to release their new EP: Bright Bright Bright.
The lead track shows off the new additions to the band. Their sound is richer and less, erm dark, then previous recordings. Multi-instrumentalist Walt McClements, of the New Orleans bands Why Are We Building Such a Big Ship and Panorama Jazz Band plays trumpet, accordion, and piano whilst Brett Bullion, a member of the Minneapolis outfit Tarlton, adds percussion.
What Bright Bright Bright is a massive statement of intent. The female vocals pushed to the front, the sparse piano intro augments the new focus of the band. Then, when the cello, accordion and drums brush in, you feel uplifted. It brings to mind Tori Amos at her most folk, or our very own Unthanks at their most bare.
Suffice to say, this is a beautiful piece of music that confirms Dark Dark Dark as ones to watch. With a new album being recorded and set for release this year, perhaps it’s time they came out from the shadows and into the light…

I was afraid Dark Dark Dark’s new release wouldn’t live up to my lofty expectations, but the songs on Bright Bright Bright are very good ones that grow even better with repeated play. An excellent follow up to The Snow Magic, it’s satisfying addition and evolution without a break in continuity. I’ll join the chorus of reviewers saying that more people need to know about these surprising artists and their sometimes-haunting, always-interesting, music.
