With the world’s eyes on Canada and the various variations on sliding, slipping, falling over and leaping that is going on right now in British Colombia, Oh! Canada returns to remind everybody that Canada isn’t just about drawing on to the button in the house (curling), or successfully overcoming wutangs (ski-across). Indeed, musical celebration seems to have been integral to the Vancouver Games – the nation embracing the idea of the cultural olympiad seemingly as much as the sporting one. With huge shows from the likes of Broken Social Scene, Dan Mangan, Sloan, Metric, Deadmau5, Feist and more, the whole event seems to have been very TLOBF friendly. We can only hope that London embraces and supports British acts in a similar way, rather than just wheeling out the usual suspects. Fingers Crossed.
Representing Vancouver on this months Oh! Canada are three bands heading to these shore in the next few months: Japandroids, The Pack AD and The New Pornographers, Also hailing from Vancouver are The Fugitives, Brasstronaut and We Are The City, who recently won the Peak Performance Prize.
On top of all this we are also pleased to have previews from the forthcoming Woodpigeon and Jason Collett albums, the debut of KASHKA, Kat Burns of Forest City Lovers’ new solo project, a couple of moments of dreamy pop brilliance from Dinosaur Bones and Memoryhouse, a face melting, fuzzy explosion from PS I Love You, and fine tunesmithery from the likes of Deromantic, Paul Pigat, Old Man Luedecke and Madison Violet. Danny Michel chips in with some pop bluster and a killer chorus, while to close things off Kat Burns returns, hooking up with James Bunton of Ohbijou for a remix of Forest City Lovers latest single, “If I Were A Tree” which may well be the first pop song to mention dendrophilia. Blimey.
