From paper boys to pin-ups. We caught up with Moshi Moshi’s latest signings: Hipper than thou Brooklyn 4-piece The Drums. Made instantly likeable to me by listing The Tough Alliance as their influence on their MySpace page. We find out what else makes them tick..
Can you recall the moment when you first decided you wanted to become a musician?
We haven’t experienced such a “moment” yet.
Where do your songs come from? What’s your inspiration?
Out of thin air. Typewriters are inspiring to us as of late. Things like that… objects, images, storybooks.
Name your Top 5 records.
Our favorite records of the moment are by the following bands:
Knight School.
Surferblood.
Cats on Fire.
Desolation Wilderness.
The Non Chalants
What was the first gig you ever played and was it a success?
It was at the Cake shop here in NYC. May 2009. Yes it was a success, a bit shaky but successful.
What one piece of criticism has stuck in your mind and was it justified?
“You guys dont play your guitars well.” I guess it was justified being that it’s completely true.
What one thing has caused you to waste your free time in the past 6 months?
Honestly, we really haven’t had much free time. We’re constantly working on some aspect of our band. We enjoy work, much more so than we do “free time”
If you weren’t making music, what do you think you’d be doing?
Flight School, Paperboy, Auto Mechanic, Military
What’s the worst job you’ve ever had?
Jon really hated being a paperboy. Adam pumped gas for a while but thats actually really cool.
We’d like you to make us a mix-tape. Pick five tracks with a theme of your choice.
“Music By Bands We Like”
‘Gardeninginging’ – Knight School
‘Harmonix’ – SurferBlood
‘The End Of State Street’ – Cats on Fire
‘Lonely Girl’ – Desolation Wilderness
‘French Navy’ – Camera Obscura

Talkative bunch aren’t they?
I forgive them for being so good live though.
They don’t interview particularly well do they?
they’re TOO COOL to talk. just look at those cheek bones.
I think they were being promoted by the really dead trendy promoter in Manchester who I got bored of being everywhere and for ages they kept spamming my facebook so I deliberately avoid all their shows and think all the bands they put on are crap (except HEALTH) so I thought The Drums would be rubbish as a result but I was bored so I decided to listen…
holy fuck. ‘I Felt Stupid’ has pretty much restored my entire faith in life and music.
That is the worst promo photo I’ve seen in a long time. Pretty much making me not listen to the band
Yeah it’s a pretty bad promo shot, but are you really going to avoid them because of it?
Also, Tom, glad to hear you’re back with us…strange choice of saviours though!
Don’t you just love when bands name the music they like and its always the most obscure bands that nooone has ever heard of. Prentecious with a capital F***. I liked them til I read this interview and saw the promo pic. The music sounds fun but these guys scream too cool for school.
