Supersonic Festival tomorrow! What should you see?

goblinimage

The excitement mounts… I’m off to Supersonic tomorrow, taking the train and enjoying some quality thinking time before descending on Birmingham for the first time in YEARS.

So, now that the timetables have been announced for the weekend’s festivities, here’s what TLOBF are going to see and recommend other like-minded travellers…

Friday starts off a late and low-key, but rumours are Drum Eyes are worthy of my attention – a Japanese trio who seem to make some nice psychedelic noise with swirling and screaming percussion. Then, well, I think I’m just going to wonder around and see what takes my fancy. The wonderfully titled Army of Flying Robots at the Factory Club will definitely find me staring, and hoping their music matches their moniker. Of course, Friday is really JUST about SUNN O)))… no vocals, it’s going to be a stripped back duo show – I’m expecting black, fog and the first use of my new ear plugs. If I haven’t been reduced to a bag of bones by the end of that, I’m going to stick around and see Venetian Snares.

Saturday lends itself to some ex-curricular activites before everything kicks off. A trip down the canal with one of the art installations sounds like a fun thing to do, so I’m hoping it doesn’t get too over-subscribed. Come late afternoon though, I fancy heading to the Outside Stage for some Flower / Corsano Duo, who the guys over at The Quietus have recommended. After that though, I’m going to embed myself near the Factory Club for Remember Remember, who’s wonderful prog-psych album bowled me over last year. Following them, one of my finds of the last month, Thought Forms are playing. A more instrumental, less hardcore version of Shellac, it’s right up my street. There’s also the wonderful noise of Skullflower to wrap things up on that stage, before heading over to see the thinking man’s guitar player Marnie Stern for some shredding. More meandering between stages next, as I fancy catching Italian legends Zu, Southern Records’ The Accused and then the adrenaline fuelled live show of Monotonix.

Come Sunday, my ears will probably be ringing constantly, so the stripped back vocals of Nancy Wallace will be nice before the sludge of Pontiak wakes me up, followed by their label mates Arbourteum. Might catch some nice Jarboe, Earthless, 65daysofstatic and Caribou before some more Italian doomness with Goblin. Sunday looks like a packed day. All capped off with John Doren’s DJing at The Railway tavern… lovely.

I’ll be tweeting all weekend, you lucky souls, so follow TLOBF below!
