San Franscisco band LoveLikeFire hit these shores in September for a long tour around the UK. During their quiet times, they’ve managed to record a cover of The Magnetic Fields track ‘Abigail Belle of Kilronan’, and we’ve got an exclusive download of it!

Here’s what Ann Yu had to say about their choice of track:

It’s sort of our unintentional rule of thumb that we don’t want to cover songs we don’t think we can change in some special way but also maintain what we loved about the song to begin with. There are too many Magnetic Fields songs that I would love to cover. Stephen Merrit is a master of love, beauty, sadness, and charm, and he really knows how to deliver intimacy and personality in his songs. Abigail Belle of Kilronan is a war song, the age old tale of two lovers separated because of things beyond their control. I love that it doesn’t hide behind any cryptic meanings, and in two minutes you can understand how sad the poor boy is for having to leave the love of his life to fight a war that isn’t really his own. This song indulges in all the drama and heartbreak of pure love. We added a low rumbling of drums sort of to signify the urgency of war at hand and then fuzzed out the guitars in jangle heaven ’cause that what the song was asking for. :) I hope Stephen Merrit will hear this version some day.”
