It seems like it’s been about 10 years since Alberta Cross released their debut EP The Thief & The Heartbreaker. It was in fact, only two years ago, but feels longer sheerly for the fact that it was re-released about 20 times. I’m not moaning by any means – it was a truly fantastic record and one that made myself and a few other TLOBF staff writers a tad excited.
The sound? Balls out alternative country mixed with folk intricacies and bluesy gospel – with a cockney swagger and Swedish vocal lilt that is helped mainly by frontman Petter Ericson Stakee who grew up in both Sweden and London. Funnily enough.
According to early reports, Broken Side Of Time sees the now NYC based band perform an inspired set of electric songs that finds the intersection of The Verve, My Morning Jacket and Neil Young.
There is a taster up on the bands MySpace page. The track, ‘ATX’ sounds fairly promising – even if it is a huge departure from their country sound of The Thief & The Heartbreaker. Admittedly, I’m a bit worried that the album is going to come over a bit Kasabian. After all, the album was mixed by John O’Mahony who has worked with the Leicester based fuck-wits in the past. Time will tell I guess.
The band are doing a few shows over the next few weeks including a support slot for Neil Young at Hyde Park and an appearence at Glastonbury.
