Well, I don’t think many people saw THAT happening.
After much speculation and cries of “Sell out!”, it turns out that Sonic Youth have signed a deal with Matador Records, across the UK and US. Having reached the end of their Universal deal, there was plenty of rumour about who the legendary New Yorker’s would sign too next and whether they’d give in to “THE MAN”.
A statement from the band reads, “Having fulfilled their contractual obligations to the Universal Music Group, Sonic Youth recently reached an agreement with Matador to release the band’s 16th album of new material in all worldwide territories, except for Japan.
“For Matador, the opportunity to work in partnership with a group who’ve made such an profound impact on their roster/hometown/collective consciousness was one to jump at. Kim Gordon, Thurston Moore, Lee Ranaldo and Steve Shelley will commence recording the new Sonic Youth LP/CD this autumn and we look forward to sharing further details in the very near future.”
Got to love press releases, they make everything sound bland…

Hmm…why bother. why not just release on starbucks instead.
Bland coffee and increasingly bland records? Much as I loved the youth, Im not overly fussed by that much of their new output. And presumably this is only the ‘studio’ albums rather than the improv stuff they’ve been doing n SYR
