Esteban – Santiago EP

Esteban are a Midlands-based band, purveyors of what they interestingly call “desert funk”. An undeniably funky four-piece, Esteban are represented here on their first EP release, Santiago.

The title (and of course the band’s name, which is a Spanish equivalent of Stephen – which itself would be quite a rubbish band name) suggests a Latin American theme, and there are definitely tinges of that on the album – especially in the opener and title track, which is fleshed out with very Latin-styled guitars, courtesy of one Liam Ryan. The guitars reach their funkiest on “Say It Loud”, a relatively simple but near-perfect anthem with an addictive chorus. In fact, probably the only thing it lacks is a Zack de la Rocha-style “UGH!” in the moment of silence after the drum rolls. I for one feel tempted to provide one myself every time I listen to it…

“Mass Aura” features an interesting play on words in its lyrics, and a nice big chorus, rolling on a conveyor belt of persistent cymbals and more funk guitar. It’s possibly the most technically accomplished track here, with frequent changes of pace and excellent guitar work. The closer “Paperboy” is a touch more stripped down, putting Steve Wright’s (not that one) vocals in the driving seat, but the big hooks are still there, accompanied by nice atmospheric backing vocals.

At only four tracks, Santiago is even more of a meagre taste of the band than most EPs – but it is a very nourishing taste, and, like pringles, will doubtless have you coming back for more. This is the sound of a band working well together and playing to their strengths, which is a good sound indeed and makes me look forward to a full-length effort from the “desert funk” pioneers that are Esteban.
