The album Turn Into Vapour has been on constant rotation on my iPod since I was kindly sent it back at the beginning of the year (read our review here). Their marvellous take on slacker indie rock reminded me of the finer moments of Sebadoh and The Lemonheads whilst still being a unique and individual voice. We caught up with the band to pitch our 20 Questions, revealing the wonders of Dirty Dancing and free energy drinks.
1. Describe your sound in 3 words.
Not, Just, Rock.
2. What was the first record you ever bought? And where did you buy it?
The Monkees Greatest Hits when I was 7….from columbia house, I think. I lived in a small town and so the only place to buy things when I was kid was in the mail. That makes me sound ancient but it was only the 80’s.
3. What’s the best cure for a hangover?
My mother says shame is the best cure for a hangover.
4. What’s on your rider?
Our Drummer Pinky always dreams of having Half of a BLT sandwich and 6 peeled oranges on the rider but it hasn’t happened yet.
5. How do you get ready for a live show?
We re-enact the dance sequence from Dirty Dancing…..it is not always easy cause its hard to find waist deep water in some cities.
6. What’s your favourite song to play live?
The newest one. It is always fun to play the new material while it’s still fresh. My personal favourite is one of Aaron’s songs that isn’t on any of our albums called “The World Forgetting”.
7. What’s your guilty pleasure?
Beds. We sleep on floors or couches more often than not. It is really nice to be able to sleep late in a comfy clean bed.
8. Who would win in a fight, a stoat or a goat and why?
The Goat…noble, foot sure and able to consume tin cans, that’s a winning combination.
9. What was the last album you bought?
Beirut The Flying Club Cup.
10. If you could rid the world of one song, what would it be?
Hedley’s latest single.
11. Who would play you in a film based upon your life?
Someone who can grow a beard and barely sing.
12. Dead or alive. What 5 acts would you have play with you at a festival?
Pavement, The Band, Julie Doiron, Smothered in Hugs (PEI), and Stevie Wonder.
13. If push comes to shove, what is your all-time favourite album?
Personally, Neil Young Harvest is the only album I have always liked with consistent adoration.
14. What’s your most memorable on the road story?
The most appropriate story I can think of was on the 401 between Toronto and Hamilton. We were driving past an “Energy Drink” promotional car and the traffic was heavy so we were moving really slow. I decided to open the side door and ask if they had any free samples. The two young women in the car said that they were all out and asked if we were a band. We said yes but then traffic picked up and we lost them. Several Moments later they appear out of nowhere on the driver side while we are both doing 60 km/h and one of the girls is hanging out the passenger side window with a case of Energy Drinks. Our Keyboardist/guitarist Matt MacDonald (also of the Superfantastics) was driving and managed to reach out the window and get the energy drinks from her while driving the van. It was a glorious moment.
15. If your life flashed before your eyes, what would be the highlights?
Swinging from Jungle Vines, Swimming in the Ocean, Playing drums, Girls, having thanksgiving dinner with Julie Doiron.
16. What’s the best piece of advice someone has ever given you and did you take notice?
Don’t let your fears make your decisions for you. I did take notice and I am happier because of it.
17. If you had to leave a body part to science, what would it be?
Whatever part of me they want….they’re going to take it anyway. You know what science is like.
18. What’s the best book you’ve read and film you’ve seen in the last 6 months?
“No Country for Old men” was the first film in a while that I felt I needed to see again immediately after watching it. I recently read Leonard Cohen’s book of poetry “Death of a Ladies Man”. It was dark and brilliant.
19. What three things could you not live without?
Something to write with, a musical instrument, and a good knife.
20. Tell us a fact about yourself we probably don’t already know.
I’m colour blind.
