20 Questions with…House of Brothers

Andrew Jackson, the driving force behind House of Brothers is one of the most promising singer songwriters this country has produced in years. His Deadman EP has been on constant rotation at TLOBF towers for months now and is totally worthy of your investigation. Check out our review here. It is of course now a customary measure here at The Line of Best Fit to grill our favourite new acts so you get to know them a little better, and what better way is there than the hard-core 20 Questions treatment? Exactly. None. Read on….

1. Describe your sound in 3 words.
Black, Antique, Oak.
2. What was the first record you ever bought? And where did you buy it?
I can’t remember exactly, but I can remember going into Stourbridge town centre and buying the first Bone, Thugs ‘n Harmony record from Our Price at a very early age.
3. What’s the best cure for a hangover?
A shower that’s hotter than the sun, followed by a full English breakfast at the local greasy spoon, plenty of tea, a hand job and then a shot of whiskey.
4. What’s on your rider?
Innocent smoothies, Gu puddings and a feather pillow.
5. How do you get ready for a live show?
A walk around the block a few times singing whatever comes into my head.
6. What’s your favourite song to play live?
I don’t have a favourite. It’s not until after the show that I can make reasonable and rationale conclusions upon which song I enjoyed most, and that song changes from show to show.
7. What’s your guilty pleasure?
Capitalism
8. Who would win in a fight, a stoat or a goat and why?
What a stupid question.
9. What was the last album you bought?
The Asylum Years Anthology by Judee Sill
10. If you could rid the world of one song - what would it be?
I kind of get off on hating the the hateful songs. It’s like watching Loose Women - I hate every single word that spews out of the haggered lips of those women, yet I carry on watching, I wouldn’t want the show to get pulled.
11. Who would play you in a film based upon your life?
My brother.
12. Dead or alive. What 5 acts would you have play with you at a festival?
Marvin Gaye, Amy Winehouse, Ryan Adams, Bjork and The Beach Boys.
13. If push comes to shove, what is your all-time favourite album?
Vespertine by Bjork
14. What’s your most memorable on the road story?
Staying in a flat above a brothel. The guys we were staying at were making a b-horror movie and had made lots of synthetic cocks and bought cheap, tacky lingerie. They paid a couple to wear all the garments, got the keys and filmed them ‘at work’ in the dungeon room of the brothel. There’s more to that story but I’ll leave it it that I think.
15. If your life flashed before your eyes, what would be the highlights?
Scoring a goal at Gigmill football tournament that broke the net off the post when I was about 7, Eating tunamelt stotties at The Seven Stars pub with my mum and dad, my first kiss when I nearly broke the poor girl’s teeth, Berlin with my love, late nights with my Bruder, pouring my Grandads pints…there’s many. I hope when you die you get taken to a luxurious lounge with a endless vodka supply,a plasma screen and a DVD of your life so you can play, stop and rewind every moment.
16. What’s the best piece of advice someone has ever given you and did you take notice?
Stay in school. And I did.
17. If you had to leave a body part to science, what would it be?
All my body parts are going with me. I leave nothing to Science.
18. What’s the best book you’ve read and film you’ve seen in the last 6 months?
Book - My Friend Leonard by James Frey
Film - This is England by Shane Meadows
19. What three things could you not live without?
My leather shows, My Levi jeans and my Concise Oxford Dictionary.
20. Tell us a fact about yourself we probably don’t already know.
I’m nearly 22 years old.
