Hey everyone! It’s the NME cool list 2007!

Posted on 07 November 2007 by Rich Thane

Frank Carter. He’s like, really, really cool you know.

Well, well, well – this is a good a reason as any to hate the NME. Their annual excerise in licking arse, “The NME Cool List 2007″ has just been published.

This year sees the number 1 spot taken by Frank Carter of Gallows (I bet he’s well pleased) replacing Beth Ditto (seriously, she was like, sooo 2006). Just what is the point in all this? Fuck knows. The best thing about this list, though I’m not sure Brandon Flowers will agree, is that his moustache pipped him 26 places to number 18 in the list – give it a record contract before someone else does!

Marvellous – it really does make you wonder if anyone actually thinks, after reading this, that they’re any better an artist for appearing on that list.

Well, I guess it’s nice to see some oldies in there too.

  2. Rich Thane Says:

where’s Todd Trainer in that list? That’s what I wanna know.

  3. Chris Marling Says:

And more to the point, where the hell am I?

Seriously though, I think taking the piss out of NME is a bit like accusing Jackie of being unintellectual. Its been a comic for young teens for decades and 13-year-olds love all that shit, so good luck to them.

But it’s a great gateway into ‘alternative’ music for young people – a stepping stone into the joyous world of bedroom misery, sixth form angst and all the joys that go with it. I still have cuttings from it from when I was wee – it introduced me to the kind of bands (and via them, the friends) I still love now, and for that I give praise. But slagging it off once you’re past 17? What’s the point?

I agree with chris marling. What is the point in slagging NME off at all when it has done so much for indie/rock music, despite what you may beleive. At 18 I still buy it occasionally, whilst not giving a damn about the fact that it is now ‘cooler’ to say you hate it rather than admit you occasinally read it.

    nme is hilariously poor
a cool list being compiled by grown adults
    reeks of the emotionally stunted
