Hot on the heals of their debut album, the rather wonderful Ends of June, we caught up Kelly Dyson and put our subtly shifted 20 Questions to them to gleen the fact that the new Transformers film isn’t great, their love of mountains and Channel Four’s T4 would get it…
1. Describe your sound in 3 words.
Lovely, nervous, disaster.
2. What would be your ideal holiday?
Wild camping on a Scottish or Welsh mountain under a black sky turning blue with a friend or two for company.
3. What’s the best cure for a hangover?
Vomiting is the only reliable way out. Though these days I probably don’t drink more than a couple of pints of bitter in a night so I haven’t had to worry about that for a while.
4. What’s on your rider?
It’s Christmas for us if we get paid enough to cover the petrol home – for a rider we would be lucky to get a free beer between the six of us.
5. How do you get ready for a live show?
I think I can speak most of the band when I say that we all try to pretend nothing like nothing is happening but end up snapping at each other and struggling with simple things like having a polite, normal conversation or walking…
6. What’s your favourite song to play live?
Any song that we actually manage to pull off is my favourite ;)
7. When was the last time you told a lie?
I try not to tell ’em.
8. Who would win in a fight, a badger or a fox and why?
The other woodland animals would split that up way before anyone got hurt.
9. What was the last album you bought?
I downloaded “No Earthly Man” by Alasdair Roberts and then wished I had been more patient and bought it on CD.
10. If you could rid the world of one song – what would it be?
Can I rid the world of T4 instead? That seems to be responsible for exposing me to most of the shit I don’t want to hear when I’m trying to find something to accompany my vomiting my hangover away on a Sunday morning.
11. Who would play you in a film based upon your life?
Some unknown nobody. The film would go straight to DVD and next week end up in Cash Converters everywhere.
12. Dead or alive. What 5 acts would you have play with you at a festival.
Okay that would be: Neil Young (Tonights the Night tour), Neutral Milk Hotel (Aeroplane tour), Elliott Smith (Basement tour), Pavement (erm… Crooked Rain tour), Nick Drake (Pink Moon tour) and lowlow.
13. Desert Island Disc? Pick only one.
Either Harvest or After the Goldrush. I have never been able to pick between the two – I would probably have to copy them both onto the one disk.
14. What’s your most memorable on the road story?
Jack Kerouac’s is the only on the road story I remember.
15. If your life flashed before your eyes, what would be the highlights?
Without trying to sound too much of a miserablist – I hope I haven’t had them yet.
16. File sharing and Myspace – Sign me up or cold shoulder?
The band has a Myspace and I don’t think we would be where we are without it or something like it. I like the fact that small communities of likeminded artists evolve out of it, but I think the whole band specific social networking thing could probably done better.
17. If you had to leave a body part to science, what would it be?
I’m pretty sure science wouldn’t be interested in any part of it. It’s as unremarkable as the next one.
18. What’s the best book you’ve read and film you’ve seen in the last 6 months?
I’ve just finished “A field guide to getting lost” by Rebecca Solnit and I recommend it highly. I can’t remember a film in the last 6 months that I would recommend to anyone. I saw Transformers the other night and felt like someone had just done a big shit all over my childhood.
19. What three things could you not live without?
I’d best write my missus, as she will have a fit if she reads this and I’ve not put her in here ;) And the music. And mountains.
20. Tell us a fact about yourself we probably don’t already know.
I’ve been in playing in bands for at least ten years and I’ve just started having guitar lessons. Progress is
