Continuing on from last weeks White Stripes performance at Glastonbury ‘05 we are offering up another classic Glastonbury set. 1997 was the year of the mud. Torrential rainfall days before the festival was due to start had turned the site into a gigantic muddy bog. 1997 was also the year that Radiohead headlined the Pyramid stage on the Saturday night.
Ten years down the line Radiohead’s Glastonbury appearence has been heralded as one of the greatest festival moments of all time, Glastonbury organiser Michael Eavis has also been quoted as saying the show was “the most inspiring festival gig in 30 years”. It turns out though, for the band it was a complete nightmare - with major monitor issues they couldn’t hear a thing onstage, not that you can tell.

I was there. I remember pitching my tent in a howling gale and driving rain. The weather actually cleared for most of the festival but it really put a dampner on some peoples performances. Supergrass needed the sun to shine for their jingly jangly bouncy tunes, the second stage internally combusted when Mansun tried to start their set three times.
But Radiohead….it truly was a remarkable performance probably when the band were at their peak of popularity and had the tunes to blow away a festival headline crowd. Happy days indeed.

Was it really that long ago?! The memories of that Glasto gig are still fresh, thankfully. It was a mindblowing performance, the emotional intensity just blew me away. I walked away from the stage with tears in my eyes! (and mud all over me) fantastic!

I was there and it’s quite simply the best gig I’ve ever seen. Amazing show from start to finish.
that performance more than made up for the agony of picking the dried mud out of my leg hair with is properly painful. Christ it was muddy that year.
